Guard

There is a year in most lives when the question changes. It stops being how to get there and becomes how to keep it. The people who reach that year describe it the same way: the room got bigger, the sleep got lighter, and the things they said no to began to matter more than the things they said yes to.

Guard is the discipline for that year and all the years after it. Its stones are the heaviest we use and the least interested in being looked at.

Smoky quartz is dark at the core and clear at the edge. Tradition holds that it was the stone of the keeper: the person left in charge of a house, a store, a border, while the owner was away. Something with a centre that could not be seen into.

Hematite is iron. It has real weight in the hand and the old belief was plain: when the ground itself was moving, you carried the stone that was made of ground. Lava stone is the opposite lesson from the same fire, born hot and cooled, kept as a reminder of what has already been survived.

Black agate and the grey-to-black gradient agates belong here for a different reason. Every bead in its place on the axis. Order, made visible, on the wrist.

A Guard piece is not rotated. It goes on and stays on, through the week, through travel, through the days that are quiet and the days that are not. Of the five disciplines it is the one whose wearers most often tell us the exact date they started, and the least likely to have taken it off since.

The long strand belongs here too. Kept on the desk, or in a drawer that is opened for a moment between two calls.
